- /bækəs ˈmaʃ/ (say bakuhs 'mahsh)
a town and shire in Victoria, north-west of Melbourne on the Werribee River.
In 1838 Captain William Henry Bacchus reclaimed swampy area to establish the town of Bacchus Marsh on land traditionally inhabited by the Wathawurung people. The Manor, built for Bacchus from around 1840, is one of the earliest surviving substantial homes in Victoria. The Border Inn opened in 1850 and was a stopping place for coaches travelling to the Ballarat goldfields. The courthouse was built in 1858–59, Millbank about 1855, and the sandstone bridge spanning Djerriwarrah Creek, just outside town, in 1858–59. Services in Holy Trinity Church in the early 1870s were conducted by Andrew Scott, who became the bushranger Captain Moonlite. Brown coal has been mined at nearby Maddingley since the 1940s.
